Midland Metro - Wednesbury to Brierley Hill Metro Extension

Here we follow developments on the Midland Metro from Wednesbury to Brierley Hill in the Black Country. Phase 1 is to Dudley so far.


West Midlands Metro line 2 will start at near Wednesbury Great Western Street Tram Stop (next to the West Midlands Metro tram depot).

It will follow track bed towards Dudley, leaving for street level onto Castle Hill.

Phase 1 is being built to Dudley, phase 2 (if it happens) will be built towards Brierley Hill.

 

Dudley

December 2022 -

The track bed can be seen from the bridge on Tipton Road, it leads back towards Wednesbury. The other side of this bridge, the Metro line will be built around Very Light Rail, going onto Trindle Road at Castle Hill.

The site around Very Light Rail is being prepared, while the current tracks at Castle Hill ends on Trindle Road.

Beyond Very Light Rail, the Midland Metro Alliance had laid tracks during 2022 on Castle Hill, near The Station Hotel and the former Dudley Hippodrome.

From the Dudley Hippodrome, the line on Castle Hill passes Dudley Zoo & Castle, also past the former Odeon Dudley (now Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses), Genting Casino, before leaving Castle Hill near Dudley Central Mosque (formerly St Edmund's Church of England School, Dudley) at Birmingham Street.

January 2024 -

The tracks on Castle Hill in Dudley are complete.

The Dudley Hippodrome was demolished in autum 2023. The tracks going into Very Light Rail are complete on the road side.

No overhead cables yet on Castle Hill, perhaps the trams here will be using batteries?

Tracks have been laid on King Street and Flood Street in Dudley.

There is a good view of the King Street Metro tracks from the pedestrian footbridge from the Churchill Shopping Centre.

Tipton

January 2024 - 

Near Dudley in Tipton on Birmingham New Road, the Hanson's Bridge was removed over a weekend in November 2023.

The Midland Metro Alliance has so far built up a concrete base on the Wednesbury side of the line, from Birmingham New Road, while the original Victorian brick base remains on the Dudley side.

Wednesbury

The Delta Junction at Wednesbury. The line from Birmingham to Wednesbury will close for two weeks from 23rd March to 9th April 2024, to allow the Midland Metro Alliance to change the track layout, and connect the two lines.
