Birmingham Progressive Synagogue - history

The first Birmingham Progressive Synagogue was located on Sheepcote Street. Desribed by Pevsner as the low modern Liberal Jewish Synagogue. It was built by Josephs of London in 1938. It was demolished in 2006. Around the same time a new synagogue was built on Bishopsgate Street at Roseland Way, not far from the Five Ways Entertainment Complex. The former site was then used as a surface car park on Sheepcote Street, until The Bank finally got under way in 2016 (it was complete by 2020).
